Positioning
Who you're for and why you win.
A fractional CMO (fractional chief marketing officer) is a senior marketing leader you share with a few other companies: the plan, the budget, the team and the number, for a fraction of a full-time executive. I do this for founder-led businesses across Australia turning over $1M to $20M. Unlike most fractional CMOs I stay to run the work, with a growth agency and a video studio behind me when you need hands.

The same job as a full-time chief marketing officer: decide who you are for and why you win, set the plan and the budget, choose the channels, hire and manage the people and agencies who execute, and report on pipeline and revenue to the founder or the board.
The difference is time. A fractional CMO works a set number of days a week or month across a small number of companies, so you pay for the seniority you need now rather than a full executive package. Most of my clients are founder-led businesses where the founder has been doing the marketing and it has stopped scaling.
The labels overlap. A fractional CMO is an ongoing, part-time leadership role. An interim CMO covers a gap, usually full-time for a few months while you recruit. A part-time CMO is the same idea as fractional with a different name. An outsourced CMO or virtual CMO usually means the role sits outside your payroll, often through an agency.
If you need someone closer to the day-to-day channels than the boardroom, an outsourced marketing manager is the better fit. If positioning is settled and the job is moving one number, look at a fractional head of growth.
Most Australian fractional CMOs quote retainers between about $5,000 and $15,000+ a month, depending on days and scope. A full-time CMO costs $300k or more once super, bonus and recruitment are counted, before the months it takes to hire one.
My retainer starts at $1,500 a month because the entry seat, Copilot, is senior judgement on tap for a team that already executes. The Captain seat, where I own the funnel and the roadmap, is priced on scope. Either way the fee is flat, not a percentage of ad spend, and month one is a paid trial.
| Typical cost | Commitment | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time CMO | $300k+ a year all in | Permanent hire, months to recruit | Businesses with a team to lead and a proven playbook |
| Interim CMO | Day rate, often full-time | A few months | Covering a gap or a turnaround |
| Typical fractional CMO | About $5k to $15k+ a month | One to three days a week | Scale-ups that need a leader, not a team |
| Fractional CMO (me) | From $1,500 a month, flat | Copilot or Captain seat | Founder-led businesses turning over $1M to $20M |
An agency executes a brief in its own channels. A consultant diagnoses and recommends, then leaves. A fractional CMO writes the brief, owns the result and manages whoever executes it, including agencies. Plenty of businesses need two of the three; few need all three at once.
| Owns the outcome | Executes | Stays | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing agency | For its channels only | Yes | While the retainer runs |
| Marketing consultant | No, advises | Rarely | For the project |
| Fractional CMO | Yes, across marketing | Through your team, or mine | Ongoing, until you hire |
Hire one after product-market fit, when growth has outrun founder-led marketing, when agencies are running without anyone directing them, or before your first marketing hire so that person has a plan to walk into.
Do not hire one if you are still finding out who buys and why. That is customer discovery, and it is cheaper to do yourself. And do not hire one to post on social media; you will pay senior rates for junior work.
I am based in Sydney and work with businesses across Australia and New Zealand, mostly remote with on-site days for planning, shoots and leadership meetings. Fused Electrical Co in Canberra grew from its first job to $2M+ in revenue with me running marketing remotely. If you are in Sydney, the Sydney fractional CMO page covers how on-site work runs.
When there is no one in-house to execute, Compound Growth builds websites, lead systems and lifecycle, and Content Department shoots the video and photo that feed ads and social.

Fractional CMO and Head of Growth are the job titles. Copilot and Captain are how the role runs day to day. You get a senior marketing leader either way. The only question is who's driving.
You fly · I'm by your side
For teams that already execute and need senior judgement on tap.
What you get
Best fit: An in-house marketer or agency already doing the work.
I fly · you're my crew
For founders without a marketing leader who want a system installed and run.
What you get
Best fit: Businesses between roughly $1M and $20M revenue.
From $1,500 a month. One retainer, either seat, a fraction of what a full-time CMO costs. The exact number depends on scope, and you get it on the first call.
Both seats, first 30 days. Audit, plan, and the first quick wins shipped.
Month one is a paid trial. If the plan and the first changes are not live within 30 days, walk away and I refund the retainer.
A fractional chief marketing officer is a senior marketing leader who works part-time across a small number of companies. You get CMO-level strategy and ownership without the cost of a full-time executive.
Most quote about $5,000 to $15,000+ a month. My flat retainer starts at $1,500 a month for the Copilot seat; the Captain seat is priced on scope. I give you the exact fee after the first call.
Weeks one and two are a diagnostic of your data, funnel, team and agencies. By day 30 you have a 90-day plan and the first fixes live. Days 30 to 90 are about getting the first channels and the reporting running on a weekly cadence.
Interim covers a gap, usually full-time for a few months. Fractional is ongoing and part-time. If you are hiring a permanent CMO soon, interim. If you need senior leadership for the next year or two without the full cost, fractional.
An agency executes a brief. I own the outcome, write the brief and manage whoever executes it, including agencies.
Consultants recommend and leave. I stay to implement, measure and adjust with your team.
A fractional CMO leads the whole function, including brand and positioning. A head of growth is closer to the funnel and the experiments. If you are still working out who you are for, start with the CMO seat.
It depends on the seat. Copilot is a few hours a fortnight; Captain is a set number of days each week. We agree it on the first call.
Yes. I work with companies across Australia and New Zealand, mostly remote, with on-site days where it helps.
Tell me what you sell, roughly where revenue sits, and what's stuck. I'll reply within a business day with an honest view on whether I can help and what I'd do first.
